BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A healthy diet play an important role in the prevention and even treatment of various diseases. Proper nutrition plays an important role in boosting of immune system. These include the consumption of macronutrients such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and also micronutrients including vitamins. Here, we aimed to systematically review the effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. METHODS: We searched the databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science on December 23, 2023. The records were downloaded into an EndNote file, the duplicates were removed, and the studies underwent a two-phase screening process based on their title/abstracts and full texts. The included articles were screened and underwent inclusion and exclusion criteria. We included the English systematic reviews and meta-analyses that concurred with the aim of our study. The selected articles were assessed by Cochrane's Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews for the quality check. The data of the eligible studies were extracted in a pre-designed word table and were used for the qualitative synthesis. RESULTS: A total of 28 reviews were included in this study. Most studies have shown that micronutrients are effective in morbidity and mortality controlling in viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 but some studies have shown that micronutrients are sometimes not effective in controlling severity. On the other hand, calcifediol was by far the most successful agent in reducing intensive care needs and mortality between studies. CONCLUSION: Individuals without malnutrition had a reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease. The administration of Vitamin D is effective in reducing the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 patients. Patients with vitamin D deficiency were more prone to experience severe infection, and they were at higher risk of morbidities and mortality. Other micronutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, and Zinc also showed some benefits in patients with COVID-19. Vitamin C showed no efficacy in COVID-19 management even in intravenous form or in high doses.

RESUMO

NAFLD is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, characterized by lipid accumulation in the liver, and usually evolves from steatohepatitis to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even HCC. Its incidence is rapidly rising in parallel with the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Current therapies are limited to lifestyle changes including dietary intervention and exercise, in which dietary modification exerts an important part in losing weight and preventing NAFLD. In this review, we briefly discuss the roles and mechanisms of dietary components including fructose, non-nutritive sweeteners, fat, proteins, and vitamins in the progression or prevention of NAFLD. We also summarize several popular dietary patterns such as calorie-restricted diets, intermittent fasting, ketogenic diets, Mediterranean diets, and dietary approach to stop hypertension diets and compare the effects of low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets in preventing the development of NAFLD. Moreover, we summarize the potential drugs targeting metabolic-related targets in NAFLD.

Traditionally a disease of adults, type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been increasingly diagnosed in youth, particularly among adolescents and young adults of minority ethnic groups. Especially, during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, obesity and prediabetes have surged not only in minority ethnic groups but also in the general population, further raising T2D risk. Regarding its pathogenesis, a gradually increasing insulin resistance due to central adiposity combined with a progressively defective ß-cell function are the main culprits. Especially in youth-onset T2D, a rapid ß-cell activity decline has been observed, leading to higher treatment failure rates, and early complications. In addition, it is well established that both the quantity and quality of food ingested by individuals play a key role in T2D pathogenesis. A chronic imbalance between caloric intake and expenditure together with impaired micronutrient intake can lead to obesity and insulin resistance on one hand, and ß-cell failure and defective insulin production on the other. This review summarizes our evolving understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in defective insulin secretion by the pancreatic islets in youth- and adult-onset T2D and, further, of the role various micronutrients play in these pathomechanisms. This knowledge is essential if we are to curtail the serious long-term complications of T2D both in pediatric and adult populations.

Alzheimer's disease is an irrevocable, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills. One of the extensively studied methods of preventing Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression is by providing a nutritional diet. Several reports have shown that intake of nutritional elements as huperzine A, ursolic acid, vitamins etc., can directly influence pathogenesis of AD. Surprisingly, the occurrence of metabolic disorders due to an unhealthy diet has been known to be a major environmental cause of AD. It has been noted that AD severity can be controlled by supplementing dietary supplements containing huge amounts of health-promoting ingredients. These elements promote cell health, regeneration, and the anti-aging process that specifically interrupt the pathogenic pathways in AD development. Fortunately, incorporating changes in the nutritional content is inexpensive, easy, acceptable, safe, effective, and in most cases, free from major adverse events. Many nutritional phytoconstituents such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids are still being evaluated in the hope of identifying a successful therapy for AD. This review discusses the therapeutical potential of several key nutrients that have been researched for treating AD treatment and the method of their neuroprotective intervention.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. The prevalence of CVD is much higher in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who may benefit from lifestyle changes, which include adapted diets. In this review, we provide the role of different groups of nutrients in patients with T2DM and CVD, as well as dietary approaches that have been associated with better and worse outcomes in those patients. Many different diets and supplements have proved to be beneficial in T2DM and CVD, but further studies, guidelines, and dietary recommendations are particularly required for patients with both diseases.

Background and Objectives: Nutritional deficiencies are one of the main triggers for the development of gastrointestinal diseases, such as ulcerative colitis (UC). Therefore, the objective of the present work consisted of determining the nutrients present in the bone broth (BB) and evaluating their anti-inflammatory properties in a murine model of UC, induced by intrarectal administration of 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS), and acetic acid (AcOH). The BB was prepared from the femur of bovine cattle and cooked in distilled water for 8 h at 100 ± 2 °C. Materials and Methods: The BB was administered ad libitum to BALB/c mice for 10 days before the induction of UC. Colon samples were collected for histological analysis and determination of cytokine expression levels by qPCR. Results: It was found that amino acids (AA) are the main nutritional contribution of BB, 54.56% of these correspond to essential AA. The prophylactic administration of BB in the murine model of UC reduced histological damage, decreased the expression of IL-1ß (61.12%), IL-6 (94.70%), and TNF-α (68.88%), and increased the expression of INF-γ (177.06%), IL-4 (541.36%), and IL-10 (531.97%). Conclusions: This study shows that BB has anti-inflammatory properties, and its consumption can decrease the symptoms of UC.

RESUMO

Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of vascular dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders. Recent studies underline that platelets play an important role in linking peripheral with central metabolic and inflammatory mechanisms. In this narrative review, we address the activation of platelets in metabolic syndrome, their effects on neuronal processes and the role of the mediators (e.g., serotonin, platelet-derived growth factor). Emerging evidence shows that nutritional compounds and their metabolites modulate these interactions-specifically, long chain fatty acids, endocannabinoids and phenolic compounds. We reviewed the role of activated platelets in neurovascular processes and nutritional compounds in platelet activation.

Objetivo: cuantificar las ingestas dietéticas de los micronutrientes implicados en el ciclo metilación-metionina (colina, betaína, folatos, vitaminas B6 y B12) en una muestra representativa de mujeres gestantes residentes en España; determinar la adecuación a las recomendaciones, y analizar sus principales fuentes alimentarias. Material y métodos: la determinación de la ingesta media se realizó a partir de los datos de consumo de los alimentos recogidos en la “Encuesta Nacional de Alimentación en población adulta, mayores y embarazadas” (ENALIA-2) (n = 133). Para el cálculo del aporte de folatos y de vitaminas B6 y B12 se emplearon los datos de composición nutricional recogidos en las “Tablas de Composición de Alimentos en España”, mientras que para la colina y la betaína, nutrientes no incluidos en las bases de datos de composición de alimentos en Europa, se empleó la “Base de Datos Nacional de Nutrientes para Referencia Estándar del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos” (USDA). La adecuación de la ingesta se estimó de acuerdo con las recomendaciones de las principales guías españolas, europeas y estadounidenses. (AU)

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Bacterial Cellulose (BC) is an exopolysaccharide produced by bacteria with unique structural and mechanical properties and is highly pure compared to plant cellulose. This study aimed to produce novel bacterial cellulose using sago liquid waste substrate and evaluate its characteristics as a potential bioplastic.<b>Materials and Methods:</b> Production of BC by static batch fermentation was studied in sago liquid waste substrate usingAcetobacter xylinumLKN6. The BC structure was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Mechanical properties were measured include tensile strength, elongation at break, elasticity (Young's modulus) and Water Holding Capacity (WHC). <b>Results:</b> The BC yield from sago liquid waste as a nutrients source was achieved 12.37 g L<sup>1</sup> and the highest BC yield 14.52 g L<sup>1</sup> in sago liquid waste medium with a sugar concentration of 10% (w/v) after 14 days fermentation period. The existence of bacterial cellulose is proven by FT-IR spectroscopy analysis based on the appearance of absorbance peaks, which are C-C bonding, C-O bonding, C-OH bonding and C-O-C bonding and represents the fingerprints of pure cellulose. The mechanical properties of BC from sago liquid waste were showed a tensile strength of 44.2-87.3 MPa, elongation at break of 4.8-5.8%, Young's Modulus of 0.86-1.64 GPa and water holding capacity of 85.9-98.6 g g<sup>1</sup>. <b>Conclusion:</b> The results suggest that sago liquid waste has great potential to use as a nutrient source in the production of bacterial cellulose and BC's prospect as the bioplastic.

Several natural compounds, such as vitamin K2, have been highlighted for their positive effects on bone metabolism. It has been proposed that skeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis, may benefit from vitamin K2-based therapies or its regular intake. However, further studies are needed to better clarify the effects of vitamin K2 in bone disorders. To this aim, we developed in vitro a three-dimensional (3D) cell culture system one step closer to the bone microenvironment based on co-culturing osteoblasts and osteoclasts precursors obtained from bone specimens and peripheral blood of the same osteoporotic patient, respectively. Such a 3-D co-culture system was more informative than the traditional 2-D cell cultures when responsiveness to vitamin K2 was analyzed, paving the way for data interpretation on single patients. Following this approach, the anabolic effects of vitamin K2 on the osteoblast counterpart were found to be correlated with bone turnover markers measured in osteoporotic patients' sera. Overall, our data suggest that co-cultured osteoblasts and osteoclast precursors from the same osteoporotic patient may be suitable to generate an in vitro 3-D experimental model that potentially reflects the individual's bone metabolism and may be useful to predict personal responsiveness to nutraceutical or drug molecules designed to positively affect bone health.

INTRODUCTION: Objective: a quantification of dietary intakes of the micronutrients involved in the methylation-methionine cycle (choline, betaine, folate, vitamins B6 and B12) in a representative sample of pregnant women in Spain; assessment of intake adequacy to available official recommendations; and analysis of their main food sources. Material and methods: the median intake of each micronutrient was established using food consumption data reported in the National Dietary Survey of adults, the elderly, and pregnant women (ENALIA-2) (n = 133). For folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 intake, nutritional composition data from the Spanish Food Composition Tables were used, whereas for choline and betaine, which are not included in European food composition databases, the National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was considered. Intake adequacy was estimated in accordance with the recommendations of the main Spanish, European, and US guidelines. Results: mean daily intakes observed were 271.1 mg/day of choline; 142.5 mg/day of betaine; 182.8 µg/day of folate; 1.4 mg/day of vitamin B6; and 4.5 µg/day of vitamin B12. Intake adequacy levels were insufficient for choline (< 60.2 %) and folate (< 30.5 %); close to adequacy for vitamin B6 (> 71.6 %); and fully adequate only in the case of vitamin B12 (> 101.1 %). It is not possible to draw any conclusions regarding betaine intake in the absence of established recommendations. Main food sources included foods of animal origin for choline and vitamin B12 (71.8 % and 97.4 %, respectively); cereals and derivatives for betaine (85.3 %); vegetables (27.5 %) together with cereals and derivatives (18.6 %) for folate; and meats and derivatives (26.6 %) followed by vegetables (17.9 %) for vitamin B6. Conclusions: these findings are clearly indicative of the need to improve the intake and nutritional status of these components, which are of great nutritional interest for the health of pregnant women and, consequently, of their offspring. Consequent to the degree of adequacy observed, it seems necessary and urgent to employ not only dietary improvement strategies and the use of fortified foods, but also nutritional supplements with an individualized approach.

No resulta posible extraer ninguna conclusión con respecto al aporte de betaína al no existir recomendaciones establecidas. Las principales fuentes alimentarias fueron: alimentos de origen animal para la colina y la vitamina B12 (71,8 % y 97,4 %, respectivamente); cereales y derivados para la betaína (85,3 %); verduras y hortalizas (27,5 %) junto a cereales y derivados (18,6 %) para los folatos; y carnes y derivados (26,6 %), seguidos de verduras y hortalizas (17,9 %) para la vitamina B6. Conclusiones: los resultados obtenidos son indicativos de la necesidad de mejorar la ingesta y el estado nutricional de estos componentes de gran interés para la salud de la mujer embarazada. Como consecuencia del grado de adecuación observado, parece necesario y urgente el empleo no solo de estrategias para mejorar la dieta y el uso de alimentos fortificados, sino también de suplementos nutricionales de manera personalizada.

Respiratory Viruses infections (RVI) such as rhinovirus, coronavirus, influenza virus, and adenovirus affect the respiratory and the immune systems. The role of nutrition in the respiratory and immune systems has been studied in some studies, and its importance is undeniable. In addition, one of the key findings in this disease is high inflammation that affects almost all patients. This systematic narrative review aims to answer the question, "Can an anti-inflammatory diet be effective in preventing or treating viral respiratory diseases?" A systematic review search was used for the articles extraction. All studies published in English from 1999 to 2020 investigating dietary inflammatory conditions and RVI were included. Food items with anti-inflammatory properties were selected based on the definition of the dietary inflammatory index (DII). We used Google Scholar, Pub Med, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer, Science Direct, Directory of Open Access Journals, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, ProQuest, EBSCO, MEDLINE, and SciELO databases for extracting articles. Keywords were restricted by DII. Based on DII, food items/nutrients are involved in inflammation, some of which have anti-inflammatory and some inflammatory properties. Some foods/nutrients, in addition to their anti-inflammatory properties, have antioxidant, antiviral, and immune-enhancing properties. Considering the immune system's involvement, increased inflammation, and involvement of the pulmonary system in RVI and the remarkable role of the anti-inflammatory foods for counteracting them, it is recommended to use a predominantly anti-inflammatory diet along with prevention/control and treatment protocols. An anti-inflammatory diet (based on DII) includes turmeric, ginger, garlic, onions, saffron, dietary vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and omega-3 are recommended to reduce infection symptoms and duration.

RESUMO

Proliferating cancer cells exhibit metabolic alterations and specific nutritional needs for adapting to their rapid growth. These changes include using aerobic glycolysis, lipid metabolic disorder, and irregular protein degradation. It may be useful to target metabolic abnormalities for cancer chemoprevention. Epidemiological and mechanism-related studies have indicated that many FDA-approved anti-metabolic drugs decrease tumor risk, inhibit tumor growth, or enhance the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs. Drugs targeting nutrient metabolism have fewer side effects with long-term use compared to chemotherapeutic drugs. The characteristics of these drugs make them promising candidates for cancer chemoprevention. Here, we summarize recent discoveries of the chemo-preventive effects of drugs targeting nutrient metabolic pathways and discuss future applications and challenges. Understanding the effects and mechanisms of anti-metabolic drugs in cancer has important implications for exploring strategies for cancer chemoprevention.

BACKGROUND: the role of ADIPOQ gene variants on metabolic changes after weight loss secondary to different hypocaloric diets remains unclear and poorly investigated. OBJECTIVE: we evaluated the effect of polymorphism rs266729 of ADIPOQ gene on biochemical changes and weight loss after a high-protein/ low-carbohydrate diet vs a standard severe hypocaloric diet during 9 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: a population of 269 obese patients was enrolled in a randomized intervention trial for 9 months with two diets. Diet HP (high protein) was 33 % of carbohydrates (86.1 g/day), 33 % of fat (39.0 g/day), and 34 % of proteins (88.6 g/day). Diet S (standard) was 1093 cal/day, 53 % carbohydrates (144.3 g/day), 27 % fats (32.6 g), and 20 % proteins (55.6 g/day). Before and after the intervention an anthropometric evaluation, an assessment of nutritional intake, and a biochemical analysis were carried out. RESULTS: all patients lost weight regardless of genotype and diet. After the intervention with a high protein hypocaloric diet (diet HP) only subjects with CC genotype showed significant improvement in cholesterol (14.4 ± 1.8 md/dL vs -5.0 ± 1.9 mg/dL; p = 0.02), LDL-cholesterol (14.4 ± 1.9 mg/dL vs -5.1 ± 1.8 mg/dL; p = 0.01), insulin (-4.1 ± 0.3 mU/L vs -2.0 ± 0.6 mU/L; p = 0.02), HOMA-IR (-1.4 ± 0.2 units vs -0.5 ± 0.3 units; p = 0.02) and adiponectin (10.2 ± 1.4 ng/dL vs 3.1 ± 1.1 ng/dL; p = 0.01) levels. After the second dietary strategy with a standard hypocaloric diet (diet S) only subjects with CC genotype showed significant improvement in total cholesterol (CC vs CG + GG) (-17.1 ± 1.9 md/dL vs -5.3 ± 1.3 mg/dL; p = 0.02), LDL-cholesterol (-12.3 ± 1.9 mg/dL vs -8.0 ± 1.2 mg/dL; p = 0.01), insulin (-4.0 ± 0.9 mU/L vs -1.3 ± 0.5 mU/L; p = 0.02), HOMA-IR (-1.2 ± 0.1 units vs -0.6 ± 0.2 units; p = 0.02), and adiponectin (11.1 ± 2.7 ng/dL vs 3.3 ± 1.2 ng/dL; p = 0.02) levels. CONCLUSION: non G-allele carriers showed a better response of LDL-cholesterol, HOMA-IR, insulin, and adiponectin levels than G-allele carriers before weight loss with both diets


ANTECEDENTES: el papel de las variantes del gen ADIPOQ en los cambios metabólicos después de la pérdida de peso secundaria a diferentes dietas hipocalóricas sigue sin estar claro y es un área poco investigada. OBJETIVO: evaluamos el efecto del polimorfismo rs266729 del gen ADIPOQ sobre los cambios bioquímicos y la pérdida de peso después de una dieta con alto contenido en proteínas y baja en carbohidratos frente a una dieta hipocalórica severa estándar durante 9 meses. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: se reclutó una muestra de 269 pacientes obesos en un ensayo de intervención aleatorizado de 9 meses con dos dietas. La dieta HP (alta en proteínas) tenía la siguiente composicion: 33 % de carbohidratos (86,1 g/día), 33 % de grasas (39,0 g/día) y 34 % de proteínas (88,6 g/día). La dieta S (estándar), de 1093 cal/día, tenía 53 % de carbohidratos (144,3 g/día), 27 % de grasas (32,6 g) y 20 % de proteínas (55,6 g/día). Antes y después de la intervención se realizaron una evaluación antropométrica, una valoración de la ingesta nutricional y un análisis bioquímico. RESULTADOS: todos los pacientes bajaron de peso independientemente del genotipo y la dieta utilizada. Después de la intervención con la dieta HP, solo los sujetos con genotipo CC mostraron una mejoría significativa de los niveles de colesterol (14,4 ± 1,8 mg/dl vs. -5,0 ± 1,9 mg/dl; p = 0,02), colesterol-LDL (14,4 ± 1,9 mg/dl frente a -5,1 ± 1,8 mg/dl; p = 0,01), insulina (-4,1 ± 0,3 mU/L frente a -2,0 ± 0,6 mU/L; p = 0,02), HOMA-IR (-1,4 ± 0,2 unidades frente a -0,5 ± 0,3 unidades; p = 0,02) y adiponectina (10,2±1,4 ng/dl frente a 3,1 ± 1,1 ng/dl; p = 0,01). Después de la segunda estrategia dietética con una dieta hipocalórica estándar (dieta S), solo los sujetos con genotipo CC mostraron una mejora significativa de los niveles de colesterol total (CC vs. CG + GG) (-17,1 ± 1,9 mg/dl vs. -5,3 ± 1,3 mg/dl; p = 0,02), colesterol-LDL (-12,3 ± 1,9 mg/dl frente a -8,0 ± 1,2 mg/dl; p = 0,01), insulina (-4,0 ± 0,9 mU/L frente a -1,3 ± 0,5 mU/L; p = 0,02), HOMA-IR (-1,2 ± 0,1 unidades frente a -0,6 ± 0,2 unidades; p = 0,02) y adiponectina (11,1 ± 2,7 ng/dl frente a 3,3 ± 1,2 ng/dl; p = 0,02). CONCLUSIÓN: los no portadores del alelo G mostraron una mejor respuesta de los niveles de colesterol-LDL, HOMA-IR, insulina y adiponectina que los portadores del alelo G antes de la pérdida de peso con ambas dietas

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic and is posing a serious challenge to mankind. As per the current scenario, there is an urgent need for antiviral that could act as a protective and therapeutic against SARS-CoV-2. Previous studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 is much similar to the SARS-CoV bat that occurred in 2002-03. Since it is a zoonotic virus, the exact source is still unknown, but it is believed bats may be the primary reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 through which it has been transferred to humans. In this review, we have tried to summarize some of the approaches that could be effective against SARS-CoV-2. Firstly, plants or plant-based products have been effective against different viral diseases, and secondly, plants or plant-based natural products have the minimum adverse effect. We have also highlighted a few vitamins and minerals that could be beneficial against SARS-CoV-2.

INTRODUCCIÓN: La encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición en México (ENSANUT-2018) señala que existe un 38.4% de sobrepeso/obesidad en la población entre 10-24 años, lo que favorece las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles (ECNT). En jóvenes universitarios los factores que mayormente contribuyen son la alimentación y la actividad física inadecuadas. OBJETIVO: Evaluar el efecto de una intervención (Programa de Estabilización Nutricional "ESNUT") en la composición corporal, índice de masa corporal, nivel de actividad física, consumo de energía y macronutrientes en estudiantes universitarios de nuevo ingreso. MÉTODOS: Diseño. Cuasiexperimental con seguimiento, de agosto de 2017 a mayo de 2018 en un Centro de Salud Universitario (CSU). Población. Estudiantes de 17 a 21 años (ambos sexos), sin condiciones de salud, gestación, lactancia, deporte de alto rendimiento o patología que impactaran en el estado nutricional, que firmaron el consentimiento informado. Los grupos experimental (GE, n=23) y control (GC, n=35) se conformaron por asignación aleatoria y ciego sencillo. Variables. Independiente: Programa ESNUT. Dependientes: Kilocalorías (Kcal), macronutrientes, masa grasa (%MG), masa músculo-esquelética (%MME), índice de masa corporal (lMC) y nivel de actividad física (NAF). Instrumentos: Bioimpedanciómetro Inbody 230; estadímetro digital SECA 274; Encuesta de nivel de actividad física (NAF); Recordatorio de 24 horas (R24), réplicas plásticas de alimentos. Análisis. Estadística descriptiva, U de Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon, ANOVA, t de student y r de Pearson, con significancia p≤0.05. RESULTADOS: El 50% del GE padecía SP/OB. Mejoró la adecuación de ingesta energética y de macronutrientes, se redujo %MG, se incrementó %MME y NAF. DISCUSIÓN: El SP/OB y bajo peso decrementaron, asociados a mejoras dietética y de NAF, similarmente a intervenciones educativo-nutricionales efectivas en la prevención de malnutrición y por consiguiente de ECNT en universitarios latinoamericanos. CONCLUSIONES: El programa "ESNUT" tuvo efecto de mejora en la ingesta, composición corporal y NAF. Deben fomentarse estilos de vida saludables en el ámbito universitario

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the Nutritional Stabilization Program "ESNUT" on body composition, BodyMass Index, energy and macronutrient intakes and on the level of physical activity in new university students. METHODS: Design. Quasi-experimental with follow-up carried out from August 2017 to May 2018 in a University Health Center (CSU). Population. Students of both sexes, from 17 to 21 years old, non-pregnant, lactation, high-performance sports, pathology or health condition impacting their nutritional status, who signed the informed consent. The experimental (EG, n=23) and control (CG, n=35) groups were made up of randomized and single-blind allocation. Variables Independent: ESNUT Program. Dependent: Kilocalories (Kcal) and macronutrients, fat mass (%FM), musculoskeletal mass(% MM), body mass index (BMI) and physical activity level (PAL). Instruments: Inbody 230 Bioimpedance Meter; SECA274 digital stadiometer; PAL survey; 24-hour reminder (R24) and plastic food replicas. Analysis. Descriptive statistics and tests: Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon U ranges, ANOVA, student's tand Pearson's r, with significance p≤0.05. RESULTS: 50% GE suffered from OW/OB. The adequacy of energy and micronutrients, intake improved,% FM was reduced, % MM and PAL increased. DISCUSSION: OW/OB and low weight were reduced associated with improvements in diet and PAL, similarly to effective educational-nutritional interventions in the prevention of malnutrition and, consequently, of CNCD in Latin American university students. CONCLUSIONS: The "ESNUT" program had an improvement effect on intake, body composition and PAL. Healthy lifestyles should be promoted in the university setting

Drone brood homogenate is a little-known bee product used in folk medicine to treat various health problems. It is a very nutritious milky substance with high content of nutrients: proteins, lipids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (A, B, E and D), and minerals. Moreover, when collected on early stage of larvae development, it is, most of all, rich source of sex hormone (testosterone, progesterone and estradiol). Some beekeepers consider drone brood as a waste product, although in some countries they use it to fight Varroa. Meanwhile, in many scientific reports a curative effect of bee drone homogenate in treating urgent global health problems have been confirmed, including ovarian dysfunction in women and male infertility, thyroid and immunity disorders, as well as malnutrition in children. A few dietary supplements based on drone brood are available online. Many patents relating to drone brood-based dietary supplements have been filed in Russia, but their prevalence in EU countries is still limited. Further research is needed to fully recognize the pharmacological activity and increase the use of drone brood.

INTRODUCTION: the restriction of nocturnal sleep has immediate effects, including the presence of excessive daytime sleepiness, general fatigue, or impaired concentration. In the long term, it increases the risk of death from cardiac, respiratory, and metabolic disorders, and the prevalence of obesity in healthy populations. However, despite the existence of a large number of studies on this topic, results have been controversial. OBJECTIVE: to discuss and analyze the evidence on the effects of nocturnal sleep restriction versus habitual sleep on dietary energy intake, including specific meals, as well as the relationship between ghrelin and leptin levels in a healthy population. METHODS: a systematic search of the literature was conducted in October 2016 and February 2019 using the PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, and Embase databases. Terms used were "sleep," "feeding behavior," "dietary energy intake," "energy intake," "meal," "ghrelin," and "leptin." RESULTS: the bibliographic search identified 384 potential articles. Of a total of eight articles accepted in the review, six contain information available for the analysis of total energy intake. The overall result shows a significant difference in energy intake between study groups (149.86 (95 % CI: 10.09-289.63); p = 0.04), and a higher intake of all macronutrients. CONCLUSIONS: the present systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that partial sleep deprivation increases total energy intake, as well as all macronutrients, when compared to habitual sleep


INTRODUCCIÓN: la restricción del sueño nocturno tiene efectos inmediatos, como la presencia de somnolencia diurna excesiva, fatiga general o alteraciones en la concentración; a largo plazo, aumenta el riesgo de muerte por trastornos cardíacos, respiratorios y metabólicos, y aumenta la prevalencia de la obesidad en las poblaciones sanas. Sin embargo, a pesar de la existencia de una gran cantidad de estudios, los resultados siguen siendo controvertidos. OBJETIVO: discutir y analizar la evidencia sobre la restricción parcial del sueño frente al sueño habitual y su efecto en la ingesta dietética de energía, incluyendo comidas específicas, así como en las concentraciones de ghrelina y leptina en una población sana. MÉTODOS: se realizó una búsqueda electrónica de la literatura entre octubre de 2016 y febrero de 2019 en PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs y Embase. Los términos utilizados fueron "sleep", "feeding behavior", "dietary energy intake", "energy intake", "meal", "ghrelin" y "leptin". RESULTADOS: la búsqueda bibliográfica identificó 384 artículos potenciales. De un total de 8 artículos aceptados en la revisión, 6 tenían información disponible para el análisis de la ingesta total de energía. El resultado general mostró una diferencia significativa en la ingesta de energía (149,86 (IC 95 %: 10,09-289,63); p = 0,04) y una mayor ingesta de todos los macronutrientes. CONCLUSIONES: la presente revisión sistemática y meta-análisis indicó que la restricción del sueño aumenta la ingesta total de energía, así como la de todos los macronutrientes, en comparación con el sueño habitual

Oxidative stress and the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis. In excess, oxidative stress is not deemed an unbalanced biochemical reaction in the critically ill rats, but it is a key pathological factor in driving systemic inflammatory response that can result in multiple organ failure in sepsis. Thus, we aimed to explore whether antioxidant nutrients could reduce or delay the oxidative stress condition of sepsis rats, and then play a prospective role in the oxidative stress condition of critical disease. In this investigation, the ability of exogenous and endogenous antioxidant nutrients (ascorbate, taurine and glutathione) to prevent sepsis-induced changes in liver injury was examined using a rat model of sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), and the underlying mechanisms were also investigated. The effects of three antioxidants on sepsis were assessed based on biochemical assays in combination with an NMR-based metabolomics approach and correlation network analysis. Our results suggested that ascorbate, taurine and glutathione had broadly similar protective effects on reducing oxidative stress. Compared with CLP rats, antioxidant-treated rats exhibited alleviated (P<.05) organ dysfunction and improved liver pathology. Moreover, taurine showed a better efficacy compared with ascorbate and glutathione, evidenced by significantly reversed metabolomics profiles toward normal state. Under conditions of sepsis, antioxidants suppressed inflammatory responses by restraining key signaling pathways, including the redox-sensitive transcription factor pathways of NF-κB and MAPK. Collectively, our findings suggested that antioxidant nutrients exerted beneficial effects on septic rats via protecting mitochondrial.

A balanced diet has always been part of a set of preventive measures with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The aim of the research is to present relevant international data on the role of nutrients in reducing the risk of CVD. Results. This article discusses current data on the effect of consumption of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, trans fats, cholesterol, dietary fiber, protein, edible salt potassium, magnesium and vitamins on the state of the cardiovascular system and the prevention of CVD. Recommendations on optimal nutrition are given to reduce cardiovascular risks, including those according to the new 3rd edition of the Guide to Cardiovascular Medicine (The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, 3 edn). Conclusion. When managing patients with cardiovascular diseases, it is necessary not only to take into account international nutritional recommendations, but also to focus the patient's attention on how to comply with them.
